America has always thrived when it thinks big and acts boldly, and now is the time for such action. A National Strategic Computing Reserve is exactly the kind of forward-thinking initiative we need to secure our place in the AI-driven future.
But we must move swiftly; the next crisis — or the next AI breakthrough — won’t wait for us to catch up, because the global AI race has reached a critical juncture…
And also because China now leads the world in AI research output, with five of its institutions topping worldwide rankings. As for the Chinese Army creating a New Branch of its Armed Forces — a Computer Science AI army, numbering a million and a half.
All computer hackers dressed in the Chinese army green uniforms — while the U.S. still thinks that it maintains some kind of an edge in research quality.
In all reality, China’s AI patent filings quadrupled America’s in 2022. Even Russia is ramping up its capabilities, because the stakes are clear: whoever leads in AI will shape its future development and win the next intelligent war.
I supported the creation of a Digital Army in the last Trump administration, but now that five years have passed since this idea was first proposed — our perceived advantage in computer guided AI resources has narrowed daily. and we are on the negative side of this equation towards Victory’s opposite side: Defeat is our perceived scale today. Why?
Because in these past five years, our need for computational power, for a digital army, and for the raw processing capability that drives our AI digital world, has exploded. AI has evolved at a blistering pace, turning once-futuristic capabilities like real-time language translation and complex strategic decision-making into everyday realities.
Still, the cost of creating a National Strategic Computing Reserve might seem high, but the price of inaction is far steeper. This isn’t just about keeping pace; it’s about maintaining our lead in a high-stakes global race. Being computationally outgunned could have dire consequences for our national security and economic future.
Therefore, methinks that we can’t afford to lose more time. The invisible arms race of the 21st century is well underway, and the victors will be those who can harness AI at unprecedented scale and speed.
Yours,
Dr Churchill
